--US-- What I Wished For

A friend of mine on Facebook posted this morning asking for "all Obamanites to write down what they wished for, keep that in mind as things 'change.'" That got me thinking. What did I wish for? What was I hoping a new administration to bring?

What I Wished For

1. For Caribou Barbie to go home. I think that Sarah Palin is emblematic of what's wrong with the Republican party. Greed. Corruption. Incompetence. It's all there. I think that McCain's choice was cynical, poorly thought out, and indicative of the sort of choices he would make as president. We don't need an angry, petulant child at the wheel right now. And we don't need someone who believes the Earth is only 6000 years old riding shotgun. Eight years of an "underachiever" (I'm being kind here) who can't pronounce "nuclear" are quite enough, thank you.

2. For an administration even slightly less corrupt than the last one. History will not be kind to Bush or to the Bush doctrine. Bush took Nixon's statement that "when the president does it that means that it is not illegal" a little too much to heart. With his suite of Guantanamo, fake WMD's, US attorney firings, illegal wiretaps, and secret torture camps, Bush makes Tricky Dick look like a choirboy.

3. A government that would "secure the blessings of liberty" to all citizens, not just their cronies. You think the war in Iraq is about fighting terrorism? If so, ask yourself how much money Halliburton made from the war.

4. The Constitution back. We owe that document a major apology for the foul and unnatural ways that it has been violated in the past 7 years. Here's to an end to warrantless wiretaps, illegal searches, unlawful imprisonment, and more.

5. The Supreme Court. Several members are likely to retire over the next 4 years. A Democrat in the White House should help to ensure that they continue to hold the line in protecting our liberties and privacy from the worse instincts of our government.

6. The end of Rove-style hate mongering. Even Karl Rove said it wouldn't work. Yet as the economic crisis kept getting worse all the McCain campaign wanted to talk about was Bill Ayers. Take a memo: we're not falling for that crap this time.

Final Wish

My last and most important wish is simple: "that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
