In honor of Halloween, we held a 3-day Zombie-fest last weekend.
Day 1, Friday, held a trip to the DCAC to see the Landless Theatre Company's production of that classic zombie flick, "Night of the Living Dead." I admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. I mean, how do you present a classic movie like that in a 50 seat black-box theatre? Well, the answer is "pretty damned well." It was a very faithul and compelling adaptation of the movie. I don't know if they'll do it again next year but if they do -- go see it. It's well worth your time.
Day 2 saw the premiere of my soon-to-be-annual "Zombie" game. The goal was to create an evening of light, action-packed, zombie killing fun and I think that was attained. My plan is for each year's game to transport the zombie movie tropes into a different genre. This year's villain was Capt. "One-Eyed" Jack Wallace; a Scots pirate with a vendetta against the crown that even death couldn't stop. The game rules are a simplified version of Deep 7's 1PG system. Character creation takes about 60 seconds; very useful in a game full of brain chomping zombies. I'm already making sinister plans for next year's game... stand by.
Day 3 was our regular Slay Do-Do day. That always includes at least one Zombie (Armstrong) but this scenario featured an unending horde of the shambling undead. Nobody really knows where they came from -- or why Phil/Gary was in command of them. Maybe that's part of the reason the episode was titled "Unknown Origin?"
Anycon 2006 (our 2nd annual "mini-con") was held Sep 2-4 at the Graysville, PA VFD. A total of 14 attendees (2 more than last year -- 16% growth!) enjoyed a long weekend of board, card, miniature, and role playing games. This year's Werewolf hunt was somewhat shorter than last year's but no less vicious. (I'd like the record to reflect that I was NOT a werewolf. Mostly I was just a mangled corpse.)
Among the many cool games played were: Pompeii, Formula De, Heroscape, Thurn and Taxis, Shadows over Camelot, and the ever popular Die Sieben Siegel. We also had an outrageously fun session of "Bungle in the Jungle," one of my 1920's Call of Cthulhu scenarios.
We've already reserved the hall for next year; Anycon 2007 will be held Sep 1-3 at the Graysville VFD.
